Gibson Guitar Company has filed a lawsuit against Activision, the company that makes and sells the popular Guitar Hero game. Even though Gibson has a licensing agreement with Activision and is paid royalties, Gibson is suing for a patent infringement based on, “for technology to simulate a musical performance”. Didn’t Gibson know that simulated guitar performance is what the game is about?
Gibson also filed lawsuits against Target, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Amazon.com, Toys ‘R’ Us and GameStop, demanding they stop selling the Guitar Hero game. It sounds to me Gibson did not realize how popular Guitar Hero was going to be and now wants a bigger cut of the profits. So does Gibson think a lawsuit is a good way to renegotiate? Did anyone at Gibson think maybe Guitar Hero has helped them sell a few guitars to kids and even a few adults after they enjoyed the game so much they decided playing the real thing could be more fun?
Activision and it’s fans of Guitar Hero should become vocal and let the Gibson Guitar Company know what they think about the lawsuit by encouraging people to purchase another brand of guitar, such as a Fender. Join a Guitar Hero Forum and spread the word.
DO NOT BUY A GIBSON GUITAR. BUY A FENDER!
