In Italy sunbathers went about their business as the bodies of two drowning victims ages 12 and 13 lie on the beach awaiting collection.

CNN: Italian outrage over Romany gypsy drowning photos

“The most shocking aspect of all this is the attitude of the people on the beach,” the statement said. “No one appears the slightest upset at the sight and presence of the children’s dead bodies on the beach: they carry on swimming, sunbathing, sipping soft drinks and chatting.”

Have the people of the world become so self absorbed, cold and uncaring, they do not care about the lives of these children or of the families they leave behind?

To be honest, from the photograph, I wouldn’t necessarily have thought that the children were dead. had they been covered with something other than a beach towel, I might have looked twice, but they just kind of look like two sunbathers lying there to me.

I thought maybe the photos were taken with a telephoto lens and made them closer. But the more I read about it on other sites, I guess it was more obvious.

How close is it acceptable to sunbathe near a body? I always thought if I was 20 feet away it was okay to catch rays, provided the face is covered. (Feet too, if the child is small enough.) Am I correct in my etiquette, or should I stay at least 40 feet from a child’s corpse?

I know, with beer it should be 50 feet, regardless of the age of the corpse, but what if I’m not drinking?
