Ask yourself this question, “How important is the health, safety, and well being of my family?”
First it is toys from China being recalled because of various safety issues, but more specifically from lead in the paint. Now there there is a recall on blood thinner manufactured in China, which is causing deaths in patience.
It is obvious in the Chinese quest for money it is willing to put our health and the health of our children at risk. When will the world community say acquiring cheap goods is not enough and demand quality in those goods? Do you support inhumane and unethical treatment of human beings just so you can buy more “stuff”? The Chinese should be scrutinized and held to our safety and health standards.
Heparin is derived from a mucous obtained from pig intestines and other animal tissues, often processed by small, unregistered workshops in China.
FDA determined last month that Baxter’s drug was contaminated with an unnatural chemical during production at a plant in China.
This in part is our own fault. Demanding a bargain, the willingness to look the other way, and greed. The Wal-Mart economic plan (cheap second rate goods), which many of Americans support is jeopardizing our safety and economy. When will your family’s well being become more important than getting a good deal? It is your greed which is driving the Chinese economy.
The Dallas Texas red light cameras are working so well (a 50% reduction in infractions) the city is rethinking it’s strategy on their usage and the deployment of more cameras. The city is now considering stopping its planned roll out of more cameras, or shutting down the cameras on a rotating basis.
Initial gross revenue estimates for the red light camera system during Dallas’ 2007-08 fiscal year were $14.8 million, according to city records. The latest estimate? About $6.2 million. City Manager Mary Suhm on Friday estimated net revenue will fall $4.1 million under initial estimates.
Dallas Morning News continues by quoting Dallas City Council member Angela Hunt:
“The idea of the red-light cameras is that they’ll be used as a revenue generator instead of being implemented for public safety purposes. It’s imperative that the council review this program, especially when the results don’t align with the initial performance projections.”
If your city or town has red light cameras, remember they are most likely there to generate revenue and have nothing to with making the streets safer for the motoring public.
An Associated Press probe find drugs in the drinking water of 41 million Americans. I came across this article which opens by stating:
A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.
Of the 62 major water providers contacted only 28 tested the quality of their water, all due to the fact the federal government does not require testing and has not set safety limits for drugs in water. This is happening as scientists are finding the natural sources of most of the nation’s water supply, also are contaminated. Contamination by pharmaceuticals in the water supply is not only being found in the United States, but in most other regions of the world too. Japanese health officials have called for health impact studies after detecting drugs in drinking water at seven different sites.
The study closes by stating:
“We know we are being exposed to other people’s drugs through our drinking water, and that can’t be good,” says Dr. David Carpenter, who directs the Institute for Health and the Environment of the State University of New York at Albany.
This is nice to know but it does surprise me. Thank you for visiting Expressing Opinions.
On Sunday the Associated Press reported the U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a California meat processing plant.. Yes, 143,000,000 pounds of frozen beef was recalled and much of the meat was provided to school lunch programs.
Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer said in a statement,
“Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, Food Safety and Inspection Service has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall.”
This meat is used in 150 school districts around the country, along with two fast food burger chains, Jack In The Box and In-N-Out. How much of this meat has already been eaten by unsuspecting school children and consumers in these restaurants?
With all of the toy recalls lately, it makes you wonder what is safe for your child? Today I came across the child seat ease of use ratings site from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). I know some of those child seats are a pain in the posterior to use and this site was useful, easy to navigate, and actually provided quality information. How did a government site pull that off? WOW!
The page has a short 3 minute video explaining how the rating system works with an actual comparison between child safety seats. If you scroll down the page to Search Ease-of-Use Ratings and click on the type of child seat you are going to purchase, the page will list child safety seats and offer a rating of one to five stars for a variety of features on various brands. TriMet is Portland Oregon’s public transit system and they have stated they are addressing the issue of security on it’s system. What are they doing to accomplish this? Well, if you have been riding their MAX trains, you should have noticed the Wackenhut security guards. But have you paid attention to what the guards actually do? Most of the time they walk around aimlessly, report broken ticket machines and graffiti. Have you ever seen them confront a menacing individual or make eye contact with that person who looks like a thug? Have you observed them riding in the rear train car at night? I bet the answer is no to all of the questions. So much for making the system safer!
And what kind of people do they hire? I don’t know, but the Wackenhut guards you see in the video below were guarding our nuclear power plants while sleeping on the job. If that is the kind of personnel Wackenhut hires to guard the countries power plants, I can only imagine the quality of individual they hire to guard the people of Portland who use the TriMet transit system.
Looks like TriMet found another way to piss away our money.
